Looking at one here real soon. Price is right so worth a look. Owner says it has steering issues. Im figuring clutches and brakes likely? Im a decent mechanic, owned many older machines but never a 933 (that will be kinda newer for me) How is the job of replacing the steering clutches and brakes on a 933? Scale of 1-10...10 being better to scrap..))

Thanks for the input!

Frank

That unit looks pretty clean and straight. Unfortunately loaders in general are about the most difficult to get access for working on them.

I figured since all the "extra stuff" further back towards the seat. I worked on Submarines as a mechanic for 20 years so I'm use to close quarters. ))

Hi Torpex,
suggest the first step is to adjust the Steer. Clutches and Brakes as per the grey OMI (Operation And Maintenance Instructions) and go from there.
If the brakes need relining they are segmented and can be removed/refitted thru the apertures at the final drive mounting areas. Clutches require removing the Final Drives to get at the Clutch packs--needs pressing gear to Rem/Refit.

I have done a few 933 Final Drive rem/refits to do bevel gear and pinions as well as Trans overhauls ALL with the Main Trax. Frame still affixed on these that worked in Super Phosphate fertilizer unloading ships holds.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thank You Eddie B! I previous owned and worked on the 2 Cat D2's. If I recall correctly the main Clutch on that D2 was dry and the steering clutches were dry as well. The one machine had a side slip under load until I washed it out the oil with kero.

The little researcg on this 933G Ive done tells me the main is wet and the steering are dry..sound right?

Do these 933G have a compression release? I know its 24v elec start..but having a comp release would be nice.

Going to inspect and start up (last run 201😎 Saturday...Hopinmg two well charged bus batteries will start her up. Its barn kept, and owner said engine is strong. 2 grand it seems too good a deal...lol

I notice alot of steering clutch problems these days..Im thinking its the operators "feathering" instead of IN/OUT..My Dad taught me FIRMLY..do NOT slip those clutches. LOL

Hi Frank,
if the compression release is fitted it would be just a shaft protruding from the rear of the Valve cover to head area.

Main clutch would be wet and Steer system is dry.

Main issues with the steer clutch and brake area is from condensation after sitting a period of time--the organic linings absorb moisture and so tend to rust to the discs or brake drum as the case may be--I feel this late a unit should have sintered bronze steer clutch discs in it and so should not suffer the rust--unless sitting in water !!!

Cheers,
Eddie B.

Foot brakes feel a little mushy...and they are slipping..I need to wash/drain the clutch/brake cavaties of oil I figure. Probably not been done in a LOooong time.

The Goy I bought it from, nice guy, but he said he dumped 2 gallons of wd 40 in..?? he couldnt remember. Said he was told to that this might free the clutch..UGH...So I need to change the trans fluid and the clutch oil. To be sure...lol

The right side clutch is stuck engaged. ((( Any suggestions? I already held the lever back and pushed into a pile of shale near full throttle a couple time..still stuck

A few electrical things to tidy up but this girl sure is pretty....

I dont wanna say what I paid..but it was alot less than A JD 1010 engine rebuild!

My observation from the photo's is that it was cared for based on the black grease all around the linkage joints. The owner actually greased it! So many machines today seem to be lacking Grease!
