What is the pinion doing?
Popping out too quickly, adjust the latches through the small cover on the clutch housing over the pinion. Setscrews are locked with cotter pins, adjust each one half a turn and see what that does.

Clutch won't snap in ...too loose or too tight, adjust by removing the cover on the top of the pinion unit or perhaps there is only a plug that must be removed to access the lock button that must be pulled and the adjusting ring turned.

Clutch isn't able to pull the main engine under compression, tighten the clutch.

Clutch is dragging and you cannot start the pony motor, flush out the compartment with diesel or kerosene and drain before refilling with ATF or engine oil. May need to loosen the adjustment until it won't pull the diesel over. It doesn't take a very firm snap on these to engage the clutch to turn the diesel.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

What is the pinion doing?

Popping out too quickly,............. adjust the latches through the small cover on the clutch housing over the pinion. 2 adjustment screws are locked with cotter pins, adjust each one half a turn and see what that does. Can have worn parts in there that cause the problem, but if it latches in initially, probably adjustment will do it.

Clutch won't snap in ...............too loose or too tight, adjust by removing the cover on the top of the pinion unit or perhaps there is only a plug that must be removed to access the adjustment lock button that must be pulled and the adjusting ring turned to the next hole, do not move it far before you test it again. You can turn the pinion by rolling the pony motor while holding the button out.

Clutch isn't able to pull the main engine under compression,........... tighten the clutch adjustment.

Clutch is dragging and you cannot start the pony motor or if you get it started you cannot engage the pinion without grinding the gears severely...........flush out the compartment with diesel or kerosene and drain before refilling with ATF or engine oil. May need to loosen the adjustment until it won't pull the diesel over and let the discs get shined up a bit and then tighten again. It doesn't take a very firm snap on these to engage the clutch to turn the diesel.
