My literature shows s/n 0667 as last built unit upgraded to 3306DI engine and built in 1981.
Hi Old Magnet,
Yes the motor that is fitted on it is a direct injection 3306
I would agree, that collet type gizmo on the end of the boom would be ideal for moving coils/spools of cable, wire or coils of rolled sheet which can be quite heavy and the blade used to roll around those items.
I think that it is most likely IMT made all the modifications on the 814 so that it could withstand the crane loads. The welding pattern on the add ons (counterweights front, back-wheel archees-suspensions) are similar to the welding pattern of the IMTcrane, not the CAT chassis. So either it was an order made to IMT from a customer to modify and make a number of 814's as wheel crane dozers, or a CAT order to IMT to fit and make stable to work with crane loads, a number of 814's to use them for their own works in CAT yards around the world.
That would make sense, Greg, because even with all the Cat yards around the world, I wouldn't think there'd be enough for an in-house production run from Cat for such a specialized tool, so it could make sense to outshop it to a specialist
After some weeks of searching, it seems that this was a forestry edition of the cat 814 in late 70's with reinforced cabin top, thick wheel arches, suspension, permafoam tyres, thick reinforced bottom . It must of been used to uncurl electricity lines in rough terrain, that's why this attachment is on the front of the articulated crane. The only thing i cannot find, is who made this 814 version, was it made in cat plant in Iowa or it came as an ordinary 814 wheel dozer in early 80's to Belgium and there some kind of local industry made all the ad ons. I know that in europe there are a couple more same versions i dont know the rest of the world.
