I can't say where they used the 666's but I was told that in their day, they were Caterpillar's biggest customer by owning more Cat units than any other contractor. I believe Granite Construction holds that position currently. I will inquire with a friend of mine who worked for Groves and now Granite and perhaps learn more about the 666s.

Interesting that you are restoring one of those. Are you going to use the bowl for a workshop?

Can't help you much with your question on SJ Groves. I don't remember them at all although I can remember a few other bigger scraper companies that were headquartered in Minnesota during the interstate construction boom. I sure would be pleased to see some pictures of the 666 restoration.
I agree some photos of the resto would be nice to see.
funny while on the topic of 666. i saw what i beleave to be a back haft go thought town the other day and thought that it might belong to a 666 but could not check the over-sized load as he was hammer down leaving town. how meany are still out there floating around. we all like pics of others people toys, it helps a little with the addition we all have on hear.lol
There is a 666 at the LeSuer County Pioneer Power Show near Lesuer Minnesota. I don't know where it came from but could find out.

Johnson Bros out of Litchfield had a number of both 660s and 666s. They took a lot of iron to Texas in the later 70s and I don't ever remember seeing them after that.
