Hello my cat sixty holds good oil pressure at start then after a few minutes sometimes more the oil
Pressure drops or sometimes just fades down to zero or just above zero. It will then pick back up slowly, then back and forth again. I’ve changed the gauge and it’s done the same with the new gauge.
I have adjusted up the oil pressure in the past. I run 40wt oil in it and wonder if the oil is going threw the strainer screen freely? Is there a pressure valve that could be stuck or not functioning causing my pressure to drop? Any ideas on testing for a broken/leaking oil line or checking oil pump or what could be wrong would be appreciated.

There is a plunger and a spring behind the adjusting screw, could be an issue there. Check where the oil lines go into the bearings. Wiggle the fittings in the cap. They are pretty famous for being loose. I’ve seen them so loose they would just pull out of the babbit.

Let us know what you find.

If all the above doesn't work warm up the engine and remove the side covers and spark plugs.Crank the engine over and check for oil loss at the main bearings. Some the babbitt cracks into several pieces and allows oil to escape. This will take two people on a 60, good luck.

I’m finally getting into this project. So far I’ve found the front and rear 90deg. Fitting loose on the main caps and one elbow loose in the block above the oil pump. I’ve noticed the treads look as if they’ve been burred with a punch or chisel at one time. Before I try to tighten the main caps I can’t remember if they will screw all the way into the Babbitt and crack it? Naturally the angle I need it it won’t tighten all the way around one more turn to be tight. Any tips? Should I just try some thread locker?
I’m this far into it I’m going to go ahead and drop the oil pump and look into it also.

I’ve wrapped the snot out of those with several wraps of Teflon tape, they will usually tighten up better. One more turn shouldn’t hurt anything. The way those 90s thread into the babbit wasn’t the best idea.

I’ve also taken the main caps clear off and thread the babbit to 3/4” pipe, then I used a 3/4”mpt to #8 jic adapter to thread into the main cap. Then I used a jic x 1/2” hose barb 90 fitting and used some good Parker pushlock hose to connect to the old oil line. I only did that trick in a extreme case when the threads on the original 90 were totally junk, but it worked great.
