The packing glands or seals in the final drives on my 60 have substantial leaks. I there a method to repair the final drives without tearing them apart? Would it work to pump grease in them instead replacing the glands?

If you what to try a grease I would use corn head grease it is a semi-fluid grease and can be used in low speed gear boxes. It is available from John Deere.

X2.

Corn head grease is the first stop here for any gear box after the seals no longer reliably keep oil in unless the bearings are also going out or the leakage would be a problem. I cannot see any downside to it for most things. I know of several examples of the OEM recommending draining the gear lube and replacing with corn head grease due to the history of leaks in a specific gearbox.

Last stop before failure is thick grease like #2 "gun" grease. That can eventually thicken up and track out so no new grease gets on the moving parts as they rotate. Definitely a last ditch effort at that point.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Hey CatManDan,

I'm not an expert, but I think I remember the seals can be tightened on a 60 somewhat. Did you follow the owners manual for tightening procedures?

I looked at the manual. You are right the seals can be tightened. I will see if I can make it work. I have Bob's info on the grease I can also use if needed. Thanks for the info.

they adjust just like a thirty.
There are four packing nuts (a stud with a nut on it) located around the drive sprocket. tighten them evenly but do not over tighten, a slight leak is ok.
