Carl - There are two models of #44, the early model is single frame, the later model is double frame. Bruce has provided info on the later double frame model.

Thanks Oz,
Here's a photo of it...then you'll have to tell me which it is...single or double frame...Then maybe you can tell me more about it...width, overall length, and such...

hello CarlsCAT ,looking at your pic it looks like a double frame 44 ,the double frame was the first ones built from 1932 and the single frame built from 1937-42.
the double frame had a higher curve on the frame like your grader and the single frame had a low curved frame ,the spec above are for the double frame

the serial number for the 2 models 44 are 4a1 for the double and 5e7001 for the single ,
nice looking grader ,maybe should pump up them tyres so they don't crack ,properly hard to get now ,bruce oz

Carl - My apologies, I was suffering from a dose of dyslexia yesterday .. 😄 .. Bruce has corrected me, the double frame was the early model, the single frame came later.

In essence, the early models used two separate channel frames that had a gap between them .. then the new, improved pull graders of 1937 utilised a single, reinforced box-section frame, from the front, to just above the rear of the circle, a-la the Cat 12 design.

Bruce has correctly ID'ed your #44 .. he's beating me at every turn on the graders this week .. 😄 .. he must have been poring over his huge collection of brochures, non-stop .. 😄

hello ozd , any correction or added info on my post or anybody's posts gratefully excepted.
,i posted the serial numbers in the first post as 8h and in the second post as 4a1 / 5e7001 for the double frame grader.
i re looked at the serial number again and my info show the single frame serial number as 8h and the double frame as 4a1 and 5e7195 ,it maybe that cat gave the power control 44 the 5e7001 number so it had diff serial number from the hand control grader ?.have you any info on the numbers ? ,bruce oz

Bruce - Yes, I do .. and the S/N range and model output is complex and poorly outlined, with number of models within models.
However, to assist us, I do have the "Caterpillar Former Model Specifications" sheet, dated April 1937.
This lists everything built by Caterpillar from company inception in 1925 to April 1937. It doesn't list "current models" (as at April 1937).

Rather than try to write it all out, in a table, as would be required .. I've scanned a portion of the booklet, dealing with graders. Note the range of S/No's associated with the #44, and the fact that other model numbers were used for the same grader, before it was renamed the #44 .. 🙄

Unfortunately, the sheet doesn't give dates or years .. but one can judge which were earlier models, by the lower S/No's being the prior models.
You can take this sheet as being the most accurate of all the Caterpillar S/N info, due to the year it was produced, and the fact that many of the models were recent.

Carl, a couple more pics and larger pics would be appreciated, so we can do a more precise ID.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
