Trying to find a replacement engine for our Steiger Cougar III ST 270 . It has the 3306 PC Cat in it . Here is my question for you guys. I have located a 3306DI for about $4500.00. Will this engine bolt right in? The tractor is a late 70's and the engine is a 1997.I'm hoping it will be a direct swap. I know the intake and exhaust manifolds will need to be swapped over. Is there going to be computer wiring to deal with? Hard to find the 3306 PC engine. We lost a rod in ours and knocked a 50 cent piece hole in the block. Might pull it out and see exactly what the damage is and fix it. Looking for the most economical fix for this old tractor. You guys have been great answering my questions . Thanks!!

Replacing a 3306PC with a 3306DI is a pretty common swap in my opinion. It's a good way to make a little more power too. No computers to deal with. I have an st270 too, and it's something I would consider doing if I had to.

well we did that in a 627 scraper to pic up a few more HP to give her a little more bark. the fly wheels are the same safe mounting for the bell housing. the way the throttle hook up need a little work. that being said it's still waiting for us to get the rad back in to it. so un-tested

I wonder what the DI engine came out of. If it was a gen set you may have trouble with governor settings. If it was a dozer or grader you may have the power you want. In a Steiger St270 the 3306 was rated at 270hp. That turbo and after cooled. 270hp was pretty much max for a 3306.

There are some applications you can find a 3306 rated at 300hp. IIRC, the 3306 truck engines were rated 300-330hp max.

I stand corrected. I had an ST 270. Good tractor but running at it's max for it's size. Big frame small engine Steiger. All I'm saying is the pump has a huge effect on the output. Make sure the engine you're looking at put's out the power you want in the rpm range you want to run at. I ran my ST 270 pretty much right on the governor. Rated hp i think was at 2100. Cheers.

The 3306DITAAC engines fitted in Foden trucks in the UK were 300hp, I'm not sure I would want to demand that much in an ag application where the power demand could be more constant than a in a truck.

Not sure if it will work on your block, but on a 4-53 with a half dollar sized hole right behind the starter motor we repaired it. We drilled it round with a hole saw of the correct size (15/16th?)and tapped it and installed a 1" pipe plug using a sealer on it. Dad got the idea from seeing one that was repaired on the smooth portion of the block using a 2" threaded plug. Ours was still running a couple years later with no issues when we traded it to upgrade. To hold the hole saw steady we drilled a piece of 1/8" plate and fastened it in the correct spot to hold the saw steady without the center bit touching anything.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
