Also, for our PS1 up Thirty, can one of the members give me the torque for the rod bolts / nuts, and the torque for the head nuts, and valve clearances? Thank you all.
If there is nothing in the Library for a Thirty - check on a big Twenty or similar machine. I would not torque them over specs for Grade 5 bolt at the maximum. Metallurgy has changed a great deal in the last 100 years. I do not recall ever using a torque wrench on the PS Thirty's I worked on as a teenager but that is long ago now. Many of the mechanics used FEEL and it worked very well in those era's. -- cts


there were no specs for those times, a normal box end wrench of the day with a good heave usually did the job and recheck after warm up and cool down--recheck again after 8 hours. Wrenches are usually sized to suit the torque needed with a good heave.
However with the advent of tension wrenches then as people requested torque settings as engines etc. became more sophisticated settings were developed.

At a Cat school we were told that upper and lower range of a given torque value was to allow for variations in each torque wrench accuracy so you choose the middle point and hope you got somewhere near within the given range!!!

CatAddict01-- as you are most probably aware - not all bolts are made equally. I would be cautious of over-tightening old bolts as you will find on a PS - Thirty. I do not have valve clearance data, but would start with about 0.015 hot (operating temperature) They will accept larger clearances much better than too tight, As a rule, I was always told to start at the center of a head or other part, and work toward the ends evenly, working in increments. That was on manifolds too. ( Thirty head was tight with 1/2" drive breaker bar, then checked again after warm up. Not scientific calibrations but never had an issue, sometimes used old head gaskets again - painted them with aluminum paint, helps to seal them again. - cts
