As posted earlier I got my 30 engine home, have a few questions. Serial number from engine is S10296 when was the dozer made. Some one posted about it having a COLD WEATHER radiator.. The radiator does look just like the one on cover of this months ACMO magazine. How rare was that set up? Other question is I removed all the spark plugs and used a bore scope to take a look at the internals they all look clean and no water or rust, but none of the pistons were close to the top, seemed they all liked 3 or 4 inches being to the head , I know it is a long stroke engine but do the pistons not come to the top or close to the head.?

It was made in 1930, you have a really late engine , as the last one built in San Leandro was # S10536

Jim

The cold weather radiator you mentioned consist of a standard radiator with 3 pieces of cast iron trim that bolts to the top and sides, the cold weather hood rest on this trim and the cold weather dash board.

Re the position of the pistons what you are seeing is 2 on the way up, one compression and one exhaust, and 2 on there way down, 1 intake and 1 power.

Even at top dead center the piston is a couple of inches from the spark plug hole.

I think a 1/2 inch could be milled of the head of these engines to add some compression.

I have heard of a 60 that had that done and spacers were made to fit under the water pipes up top to keep alingment

Thanks I had decided that on piston position. If I never get it running at least I have a nice radiator but plan on getting it fired up. Right now trying to decide how they started it. The flywheel holes are not slotted and no provision for a crank on the front.

If it had a cold weather package radiator & hood. Was it a snow plow tractor as you referred to it as a "Dozer"? Wouldn't happen to be a shaft hanging out of its rearend where it had a crank maybe?

It seems to have a crankless shaft comming from the front of the radiator.

My Thirty has a homemade (pipe with free turning handle) crank clamped to the shaft.

Looks like I will have to attach something to the shaft sticking out front to turn the engine. Have a older split head 30 here and first thing I noticed is the breather on it is external but looking at this photo the breather was tucked up inside the engine housing. Got the thing soaking right now will let you guys know when it turns over.
