I am trying to determine how, and to what level, to add gear lube to the transmission and bevel gear case of my Cat 22. I have an idea how to add but I don't know the proper level. I don't want to lead myself astray and over/underfill like I almost did on the final drives. I haven't been able to crawl under it yet to search for plugs.

There is an oil level plug on the right side of the tranny case near the brake actuator. Fill to where it just comes out of the plug.

I put gear oil in the transmission until it came out the plug just aft of the brake pedals but I don't see any oil in the ring gear compartment. I was looking down a round hole that became visible when I took the cover off of the clutch adjusting area. I was able to see the back end of a ring gear but could see no oil. I thought that the two were connected as far as lubrication was concerned.

Thanks for any info

If you took off the clutch adjusting cover, you were looking at the back of the flywheel, clutch and associated linkages and there should be no oil there other than some light seepage.

I guess that I was too tired when I posted my comment about the clutch adjusting area. I meant to say the steering clutch adjusting area. I could see the back of the ring gear. If I pulled both steering clutches back and let out the flywheel clutch, I could see the ring gear turn.

Thanks

Pull the bevel gear cover or PTO off the back and you can check it there. It will get in there normally but maybe there is some crud in your case.
