Just wait til you get it in front of a crowd...a tractor or engine will never fail to start until you take it to a show, or heaven forbid kill it hooked to the pulling sled in front of hundreds of people...😛
My theory is if you kill it hooked to the pulling sled, the tractor is telling you " Enough of this s... . I did my part all these years, I want to live a quiet life of tractor shows only". LOL?:usa2:
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
Hi, RonM and Dozerman51.
MY theory if you kill it while pulling a sled is that you weren't paying enough attention to what the tractor was telling you about its relationship to the load.

Yeah, like you've never killed an engine, Deas...👋
Steve ........ Did you get it running and make the sale?: If not let me know.

Hi, RonM.
Yes, I have killed an engine - or even 2 - WHEN I wasn't paying attention. Similar situation to pretty much ALL traffic accidents being caused by 'mechanical failure' - - - - - the 'loose nut' holding the steering wheel. 😄

Well, the human tendency in a tractor pull is to get every inch you can, so it happens...& something about being killed under a hard pull makes a (gas) engine not want to start right up again. This of course is more of a problem with hand-crankers...humping a JD G or D over under stress in front of a crowd is good exercise.
Funniest thing I ever saw at the pull was a JD 70 Diesel...the guy idled it down too much taking up the slack, & it kept running when he pulled the clutch. But it sounded funny, & oil started puking out of the air stack...running backwards! He put her in first to pull, but she backed up against the sled... He was totally flustered, hadn't seen the oil puking out, & kept trying to find a "forward" gear. I was working the hook, & finally told him "Shut it off Calvin, it's runnin' backwards!" He was so befuddled I had to tell him twice, he looked at me like I was crazy...finally convinced him to kill it, & it was OK when he restarted it...just a mess from the oil. Those old 2-cyl. diesels would do that with just the right combination of clutch & bouncing back on compression.

Hi, RonM.
I've hadda 2T D4 do that - - - when I was too slow knocking the clutch out. Strange sounds and oil coming out of the air cleaner was enough for me. Shut it down and fire the pony up to get it running the RIGHT way again.
Some of the old 1-lung diesel tractors could be gotten running backwards when stationary by shutting the throttle down until they were almost stopped and then jerking the throttle open again. Field Marshals and Lanz tractors were 2 examples of this.
