You need to look at your flywheel to see if there is a ring gear on it, first.

We are past that. We are looking for a source for the starter motor. Or if I can find specs or drawings I can cast and machine the nose cone. I've been told that the R2 may have had a starter. Did the 22 and R2 have the same engine? thx Scotty

there are two models of the R2 the first one is identical to the 22 and is very rare uses the same starter as the 22, delco remy #736-D. The other is a gas version of the D2 uses a delco starter #1107426.

A pic of a 22 with electric start conversion.

Someone posted this picture ages ago, I suppose he had no ring gear or starter hole but nevertheless he got around it and avoided knocking it off as well.

I have a 736 D Delco Starter less drive for a Cat 22.It will fit 22's with a factory ring gear.My 22 had an aftermarket ring gear on flywheel so it wouldn't work.It took me two years of searching to find the right one to fit.
It was worth the search.
