I need to adjust the clutch brake on my Cat 22. The trans just spins up with the engine clutch disengaged which just causes the gears to grind.
I can start it by putting it into gear (reverse), Tying back the final drive clutches, then start it up.
I then hop in and push in the engine clutch, then quickly shift from reverse to first. I can then release the final drive clutches and drive around some.
The obvious problem is that if I miss a quick shift, the trans spins the gears up and then I annot get it in to gear. I do not want to grind the gears, just want to adjust or fix the clutch brake.
The manual is somewhat vague on the adjustment.
Do you do the adjustment at the cover that is under the gas tank, or only on the side of the bell housing, or both?
Where do I start?
I would like to know from you experienced guys please.
Thanks.

From what I remember from when I had my 22 split apart last year (to fix a stuck clutch) their is supposed to be a 1/8" gap for the clutch brake. You need to remove the cover that is under the gas tank and check. It is possible that the linings are wore out and you have no adjustment left, but you will see when you have the cover off. I believe that their is a set screw that you have to loosen to adjust the clutch brake. If the linings are gone you will need to split the tractor and have it re-lined.
Hope this sorta helps

I am in the process of assembling my CAT 22, 2F5209. I had the clutch brake re-lined, and have now installed it on the transmission input shaft. There are two 3/8" bolts that hold the brake to the collar on the input shaft. There are several sets of holes arranged axially around the brake. To adjust the brake you will need to remove the cover under the gas tank, remove the two retaining bolts, and move the brake to the next set of holes (which adjusts the clearance) and replace the bolts. I believe that a clearance of 1/8" is correct for the adjustment. When I disassembled my unit I found that the two bolts were missing. Don't know where they ended up, not in the bottom of the transmission casing. Hope this helps. Ray

Welcome on Board dshil . There are 2 types of clutch brakes on the Twenty Two 2F1 to 1J37 is one type and 1J38 to 1J5157 is another .The later one has a slit Brake for easy removal [2 piece] and has 2 Bolts to Remove it [A "C" or offset Socket is a big Help ] the 2 Halves have Locating Pins in them and the Spacer
[3B8205 ] has 2 sets of offset Holes giving I think it is 6 Adjustments .The earlier Brake is easly adusted by undoing the 2 Studs and rotating brake toward clutch a hole and replacing Studs . If however the Brake pad is Worn out , Sorry , you need to split tractor to Replace . Unless you are Hudini , I would take fuel tank off to do the Job . As previously stated about 1/8 gap is needed . Good luck and tell us how You get on LJ

Thanks for the replies. The more information, the more help it is.
Kind of a spur of the moment post since I was out in the shed with the CAT yesterday.
Just madee we wonder if youu can really adjust it under the gas tank.
Best advice is to remove the gas tank.
I had planned on it since I have left it dry for years and ran it with an external tank to get all the fumes out in preparation of doing some welding to it.
Good timing to adjust the brake or discover if it is going ot need relining.
Thanks again.
Please post more info. Always helps.

I just had to adjust mine last year because it was a bit hard getting it into gear after the oil warmed up. I removed the gas tank and the bracket the tank sits on to get room to work, I think it would be almost impossible to adjust with the tank and bracket in place. The manual says the clutch brake should have at least 1/16" clearance and that's what I set it at but that seemed to be too close for some reason. It made it real easy to put into gear but it was hard as heck to get it back out of gear. I think maybe the brake was making contact before the clutch was completely disengaged and that was keeping some pressure on the gears. I had to take the tank back off and back it off one hole so it is closer to the 1/8" that others have mentioned and now it works perfectly both into and out of gear. If I had it over to do I think I would try to come up with a way to cap the oil line for the gauge and jury rig in a temporary fuel supply so I could drive it around for a few minutes to make sure it worked right before putting the tank back on.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
