Removed mag again, figured out the pawl release (didn't realize how subtle it is) set the marks and put it back in. Used the crank and turned over a couple if times and lined up the marks and now its a tooth off. Timing chain/cam jumping? It is going to rain any minute so its time to take a break. Very frustrating. thanx steve

hello ., one other thing is the spine on the drive wears on the coupling , you can machine the face back a bit to get a better area on the coupling if it is worn , also check that the roll pin in the drives is not broken or worn ,bruce oz

is there excessive slop in the drive train/mechanisms that would be able to cause a slight timing issue? on some high hour engines i have worked on, there was enough play in the timing gear train that you could install an injection pump and have it perfectly timed, but if you rolled the engine over 720 degrees the timeing would be late and you'd have adjust the timing to get it exact.

The coupler may be on a spline that you could relocate. Much easier to do that than pull the timing cover.

Funny how great minds think alike. Wish I had one. Driving over to Oakhurst to get a new catalytic converter installed I thought about the coupler, so when I got back between cloud bursts I marked the shaft and coupler (white out again) and cranked it over and could see no slippage. It seems to be now exactly where it was the first time I took the mag out, so tomorrow I put the cap and wires on and try again. Thanx for the info and I'll let you all know one way or the other. steve

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
