I have a cat 212 motor grader 9T4398 with a blown head gasket. Pulled the head off and took it to a Machine Shop that was confident they could get all the parts and gaskets I needed. Now they are struggling to find anything for the head or identifying the motor. If anyone can help me with information about the grader and motor it would be greatly appreciated.

Should be a 4" bore 4 cylinder D311 engine. Used in the D2 4U and 5U tractors as well as the 212 9T graders.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks. I'll pass that on to my machine shop and give Harts Machine Shop a call as well. Next week I'm going to the cat dealer in Indy. Hopefully they'll help out too.

Florin Tractor had all my stuff for my head on my 212 Grader 1R565. Valves, springs, head gasket. Their website has a parts number search, if you have the Cat part #

So at this point we’ve located most of the parts. I’m still looking for 5 valve guides. If anyone else knows of anymore resources for parts I would greatly appreciate it.

Also I read on another post that D-4/D315 valve guides could be modified to work can anyone comfirm and possibly have the part number for that valve guide?

“OK, I stand to be corrected. I jumped a line to the D3400.
D311 Valve stem dia. new Int. = 0.435- 0.436", Exh.= 0.434 - 0.435"
Guide dia. = 0.440 - 0.441"
D315 Valve stem dia. new Int. = 0.435 - 0.436", Exh. - 0.434 - 0.435"
Guide dia. = 0.440 - 0.441"
You are correct on the guide lengths so yes, looks like you could cut down the D4 guides to fit the D2.”

Its no big deal for a machine shop to make new guides for you. I made all 8 for my d4400....WA7OPY

Hi Team,
surely any worthwhile engine cylinder head repair shop can source suitable guide sleeves, to fit after boring the existing guides--our local shop Dealer used did this often on older units that parts were scarce for.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
