I am attempting to locate the anchor point of the handbrake return spring. I have the parts book but it is not very informative as to the actual anchor point for this spring. The spring runs towards the rear of the grader on the left side but there is no obvious attachment point. I know where it attaches to the handbrake lever bell crank but have no idea where the anchor point was.

If anyone would post a picture or describe where this spring is supposed to be anchored I would really appreciate it.

Thank you! I have been under there holding the spring trying to figure out just where it was supposed to be anchored and it is elusive to say the least.

OldNuc,
I believe I have found what you are looking for...
It's hot outside ! 100 degrees ! But, i got some feed sacks, flashlight, camera, and Parts Manual, smoothed some rocks under the grader, and took a good look...Well, no spring under the running grader, 9T2508...I can see where one attaches to the yoke on the handbrake...where the other end of the spring attaches was a mystery...
So, I went over to the 9T4787 to see what was there...Well, though I'm pushin' 70, 67 actually, I crawled under the grader...and spotted part of a spring hangin' from the yoke... but no idea where the other end was...Crawled out from under the grader and looked closely at the bell-housing area...I could see a part of a spring hangin' down, but not what it was attached to...So,
I took the lower panel off the side of the engine....AND, there it is....the mounting...It's kind of a washer with an eye on the side of it...It is under a bolt on the bell-housing in line with the clutch pedal shaft...
On page 141...Brake and Flywheel Clutch Control...of the Parts Manual for 212 Grader (SN 9T1-9T5220)...on the left side of the page...at the end of the spring...is part no. 4B4280 WASHER...Thats the washer with the eye on it for the spring to attach to...
I took a couple of photos of this washer, with the broken spring hanging from it...Now, I have to download them and reduce them for posting...
So, OldNuc, right now, I'd suggest taking the lower panel off the side of the engine...and see if that washer with the eye is there...
Looks like I need to make a spring hanger washer myself, and locate a spring...for my 9T2508...

Ah, so its on the bell housing. I did not look there for a washer with a tab. I will pull the lower side off in the AM before the heat and humidity show up for the day and see what is under there.

I am sure the final answer will be the pix unless there is the remains left in place of the part. I had begin to suspect that it was some kind of bracket or glorified washer but the only attachment that looked likely was the lower bolt in the side panel that holds the gauge tubing and that did not look sturdy enough to stand the repeated pull of the spring.

I also am 67.😄

OldNuc,
I just can't seem to get the photos reduced in size for posting. That's the one thing I don't like about digital cameras. Never had a problem with the 35mm. Just scanned the photos and put them in a file for easy e-mailin' and such...If you don't find that "washer" on the bell housing, the next best thing for me to do is just e-mail you the photos...I'm going to take the handbrake off the 9T2508 to fix the thumb release on it...Spring is probably rusted up or broken...It's stuck...
Have you figured out where to get a new hand brake release spring ?
An item that may be of interest to you...I found a round gearshift knob at the Car Quest Auto Parts on the HELP rack...Part No. 76933...that fits perfect for the gearshift... I ordered 2 more for the controls....

I went out this AM and pulled the side panel off and took a look. This machine is 9T3435 and is slightly different than the first 2500 or so. It was originally ordered by the state of Iowa and after arrival painted in the official IDOT pumpkin orange, over the lovely CAT yellow. The only benefit of that is it is relatively easy to spot any previous disassembly. I did take some pictures though.

Looking at the 2 bolts in the bell housing there is no sign of them ever having been removed as there are still traces of yellow paint under the orange. I also see that your clutch release arm has a small loop on the front face. There is a sign of wear in that loop eye. the parts book does not show the loop on the lever 1A6461 and there does not seem to be an updated part number. I wonder if later machines used a different spring and connected it to the clutch release arm?

The spring called out in the parts book is a rather strong spring and is available from one source listed on Machinery Trader, part number 0S1670 is replaced by 5H6044 and Country line has 1 listed. The hardware store has a spring in the spring selections that will work also and I will bet its cheaper. It looks like an old Ford or Chevy clutch return spring. Its about 7" long overall and has long hooks on each end.

The washer on the bolt with the special eye washer you show looks to be thiner.

As usual, nothing is as simple as it looks.😄

The original pictures are a bit easier to interpret as they are considerably larger, about 2.4meg each. Not good for dialup.

Well Sir, I've been under the 9T2508 this morning tryin' to get the handbrake off...The clevis pin at the handbrake is stuck and I can't get it out right now...Later when it cools off, I'm goin' to heat it up with a torch and get it loose... i can't get the other clevis pin at the end of the linkage loose neither...I need my son to get under there to help...
Overall, I've been lookin' at the line-up for the handbrake release spring...Looks to me like the special washer on the bell housing is the correct anchor point...which is on my 9T4787...I'm inclined to believe at some point in time, the anchor point was removed from my 9T2508...maybe even yours...Spring broke and such...The parts just happened to be left on my 9T4787...It's the best clue we have...
Thanks for the info on the spring...I'm going to see what the parts houses, hardware stores, lumber yards, and such have to offer on the spring...I think I've seen something like that at Tractor Supply...
It's hot now...and I don't need any more sun on my hide...
Think I'll take it easy this afternoon...Go into town and looks for that spring, and pick up the knobs for the controls...Later, CarlsCAT

I have 2 earlier parts books and they both specify teh special washer. It would not surprise me that the washer was removed. I suspect that the state could have had the engine out of this machine at some time and not made a major mess of it.

I unstuck the brake lever button and linkage by spraying it down with diesel oil. Works very well now. If you pull on the brake it takes 2 hands to get it releases, one to pull back on it and the other to push the button. I need the spring.

Searched the town over for a spring that would match the broken handbrake return spring I have...None to be found... Except...at Tractor Supply...I found some springs that are the same 1 inch diameter 8 1/2 inches long...They were on clearance for $0.94 apiece...I bought all 4 of them...They are C-337's...1"X 8.5"X 0.120", or 25.44mm x 216.24mm x 3.05mm, Made by Century Spring Corp, Los Angeles, CA., Made in USA, 800-237-5225...
Now that I look at this info, I wonder if I just might call this company and see if they could make a spring just like the one off the grader...I'm going to go ahead and try to unwind the ends of one of these new springs to see if I can get close to the original one...
Also picked up the gearshift knobs for the controls of the grader...One old one that was cracked, came off in pieces leaving the metal part on the shift handle...Heated it up with the torch...and it came off...So, the control box looks good with the new knobs...
Got the handbrake lever off when my son came home from work...Had to heat up the clevis a couple of times before we could get the pin out...The handbrake lever is now on the workbench waiting to be worked on...
And so with the setting sun...I called it a day...it was a hot one, too...102...
