What can you guys tell me about this machine? https://buffalo.craigslist.org/hvo/d/aag-engine-rebuilt-1978-cat/6595799626.html

The good, the bad, the ugly...

It's up for sale in my neck of the woods.

I have always thought of the 12G being an improvement on the under powered/low torque 130G. Instead of the 4 cylinder engine as in the 130G, Cat fitted a 6 cylinder 3306 into the same frame and called it a 12G. To my knowledge they where/still are, a very good grader. This one appears to be selling at a very good price, only downside is it doesn't have an air conditioned cabin fitted.

Here in Australia, some 130G's have been converted to 3306 engines and then have basically become a 12G in most respects.

Seems too good to be true at that price. Granted it doesn’t have a cab but it’s a relatively modern, articulating, hydraulic grader. With a cab it’s a $30,000-40,000 blade in good working condition.

That's a direct drive, 3306 engine (before sleeve metering), articulated frame, full hydraulic controls, hydraulic sideshift and tilt standard, oil disc brakes, dual air unit.
Production from 1974 to 1996 with 16,201 units built.
Seems like a good deal to me.

I had 61M7378 for 12 years, we did all our finishing with it, never had to do anything to the drive train and only head work to the engine once. It sold for $42K last year, had a full cab but no heat & air. That's a killer deal if it's what the add describes if it's not some kind of scam.

Here is another one that just popped up locally: https://buffalo.craigslist.org/hvo/d/grader/6598722788.html

What model is that one?

I'm thinking it has to be some kind of scam... I just got done looking on Machinery Trader and most indeed are selling for 30-40k.

You could eyeball the serial # and check in with Cat and the cops to see if it's been reported. I wouldn't think that one in Buffalo would be though since it's parked right out there by the road with a bright, noticeable coat of paint. More like a bait-n-switch on the price

If you hand over the money you better have it on your truck before you leave site of it. I would bet it would be gone the next day.

So it looks like the 61M listing is a scam. I got an email last night saying they needed my real email and not the craigslist auto-generated email due to spam box issues. So I made up a gmail account and sent it to them, here is what I got:

[quote]Hi,

The 1978 CAT 12G is in perfect condition, no mechanical problems. I want to sell it for $10,000 with the shipping included.
I am selling it because my husband died and I don't need it anymore. He was the one who used it...
Now it is at the shipping company in Rapid City, SD, ready to be delivered. I want to use the eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection and I will list it on eBay with the Buy it Now option if you agree my sale terms. This way we are both protected by eBay, who works as a third party.
If you are still interested I will explain the transaction and I will send you pictures.

Also, when I search that full serial number, I get many hits from Machinery Trader for ~$35,000. I can't actually find the ad, but I see the price in the Google search verbiage.

This is a common eBay scam:

[quote]For most listings, the eBay Money Back Guarantee protects you if the seller never actually ships you the item. But there are several categories of items that aren’t covered by the Guarantee:
Vehicles
Real estate
Items sold by Sotheby’s
Websites and businesses for sale
Classified ads
Services
Some kinds of business equipment

Note that these tend to be high-value transactions, typically in the range of thousands of dollars. It’s reasonable for eBay to make exceptions for these kinds of items. But the scam is simple: you send payment and nothing happens.

How to Avoid It

Even if you check the seller’s feedback and it looks overwhelmingly positive, you can never be sure that such items aren’t scams. They might be playing the long con: building up a spectacular rating over tons of tiny transactions, then scamming you out of this one huge transaction.

All you can do is avoid shopping in categories that aren’t covered by eBay’s Money Back Guarantee.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
