I have a Cat 12, Serial number 70D1254. How do you get a clutch unstuck?

Check the adjustment so you know you have it releasing properly.

Does it feel like it's operating correctly. Did it work correctly last time it ran? Has it been sitting up a long time or did this happen suddenly with loss of free travel? Just wondering if the clutch could have stacked a lining and not be releasable. I doubt that would happen while sitting up unless you had water in the clutch and maybe not then.

If it happened over a long time sitting then attempt to pull it in as high a gear as possible with compression and w/o fuel on and see if you can slip the clutch by holding it down while pulling. Have the blade near the ground for emergency stops in case it cranks somehow.

Other alternative is to pick a good area and push it off in as high a gear as practical and work the steam out of it with the clutch held in. If you can't grade, you could try to hit the brakes and slip it or chain it back to the pushing tractor and let it try to drag that after you get it going. Again blade kept near the ground for emergency use.

Higher gears strain the clutch the most.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I had luck a few times by. Some how hold the clutch lever in the release position with block or chain then put the trans. in 3 or 4th gear and the engine compression on and no fuel you don't want it to start, then with another tractor move the grader back and forth a short distance. When the fans quits moving it broke free. Good Luck

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
