Hello

I have a Cat 12 grader serial 7T-2303 with a D4600 engine. The pony motor has been a pain to start and hoping to convert it to electric direct start. The other day the dicovered the starter pinion gear went bad p/n 4B1597 which is hard to get.

PPls advice on DIY for the direct engine start from part numbers of starter, if i will need a gear attachment on starter, direction of starter rotation and location for install. I would also like to convert the generator into an alternator. Is the pinion gear 4B1597 still available from Cat?

Your assistance is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Looks like you need the bearings and seal instead of the pinion gear sleeve. But if it is damaged beyond use, a google search shows several hits for both new and used. You might find a complete pinion assembly as cheap or cheaper than the parts to fix that one. There are a LOT of them out there. I could sell several from my collection as could many others I am sure.

The area you circled can be sawed with a drill and hole saw to put a Delco starter in there. I do not know if OldMagnet has the template fro the grader clutch housing to get the center for the hole marked correctly. Maybe he will be along soon to advise.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time๐Ÿ˜„

I can get you the starter info and drill pattern but I don't have the centering for the 7T D4600. I do have dimensions for the 8T (D31๐Ÿ˜Ž but I'm not sure there the same.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
