Hi, DGriffin.
Ifn my mem'ry serves me rightly, there should had oughta be a serial # plate or the place where one 'yoosta' be on the engine block inboard of the starter pinon clutch lever and another on one side or the other - but usually the left - of the forward sloping section of the gooseneck. If the tags are gone, look for traces of old rivets or rivet holes 'cos the SN should be stamped into the parent metal under where the tag yoosta was.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Look here, the other spot is on the flange between the block and oil pan, sometimes it’s under the injection pump other times it was over by the oil filter.

Got the engine serial number S9T56 not sure if it is a 311 or a 315 no luck with the machine s/no I can see where the old rivot holes are on the left front side of the goose neck but no numbers stamped into frame I should be fine once I work out which engine I have I need to order parts for engine I can’t get it to fire I have fuel up to injectors still no go I am thinking low compression since the oil bath air filter was empty I am trying to work out how to do a compression test on it as in what adaptors I need what’s your thoughts

Hi, DGriffin.
If this machine has been standing for a while but the engine is still turning free, remove the injectors and put a 'squirt' of engine oil into each cylinder. Let it soak for a 1/2 hour or so and then turn the engine over a few times to spread the oil around the rings and up and down the cylinder walls. Replace the injectors and try again to start it.

If the engine is 'tired', the oil might just be enough to get the compression up to a level at which it will start and run. NOT a permanent fix but it may get you going.

Gday I put some oil in the cylinders and started it briefly I think I’m up for at least a hone and some new rings but I will probably open up a can of worms
Have you got any idea which engine it is with engine s/no -S9T56 or can you tell by photos and would you have any recommendations on engine parts suppliers for these old girls
Cheers dale

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
