Our Cat 10 has a leak at the water pump. Is there packing behind the nut? I only have the small manual, not much help. PT3587 Does anyone have a parts illustration to share? Thanks!

I do not own a TEN (yet!), but I believe there should be packing material, and if it isn't worn out, you tighten the nut, but I wish to think it is left hand thread? Cross your fingers that the shaft is not worn/grooved. Someone that is experienced should chime in to assist you shortly. JM

There is a packing behind the nut. The trick is that there were three different pumps used on the Ten. The first two had only minor differences between each other, but the third was to totally different animal and was used for the replacement of the first too. There was someone who was making the shaft for the early pumps a few years ago, but I can not remember who it was.

Thanks for the pics. The second one most closely matches our machine. I have the nut backed off, so will try to get the old packing dug out. I'm trying to avoid disturbing the old radiator connections/bolts. It's curious that the packing part number is different on illustration #2 and #3.

So if you haven’t tried tightening the nut slightly. I would not remove the packing. Maybe remove the nut and add a small amount of packing and re-tighten it. You could open a can of worms by trying to dig out all the packing out and not getting it out.

There is a shaft packing. You need a short wrench to turn it. Hopefully some hack has not used channel locks on it. It took me quite a while to file the flats back in the nut. I now have to use a short one inch wrench. New packing can be found at McMaster Carr
