Okay, this is going to sound a little weird, but here goes:

Those few of you that might have been following my progress in restoring my Grandfather's D24U may recall that I have never been able to get the Pony carb to work right. I finally figured out why. The main jet that sits in the float-bowl is MISSING. I wondered every time I took it apart that the needle that is suspended from the top of the float bowl seemed to just seat into a hole in the bottom with no brass receiving jet, but what do I know? So I finally looked closely at some diagrams and there it is ( or is supposed to be). Boy am I a dumbass. I guess my Grandfather's mechanic buddy who helped him with forgot to put it back in after disassembly and cleaning(probably a dozen years ago).

In any case, I either need a parts carb or a main jet. So far I have called Florin Tractor, General Gear in Boise, the carb shop in LA that sells Zenith, and a couple of collectors I was told about, but no luck so far. The Cat part number for the carb is 5F3527, I think the Zenith number is X10368f.

BTW, I have a message in to the Carb Shop, no response yet. I bought my rebuild kit from them. I know this was the missing link in a great running pony motor, so now I feel really close but still a million miles away... any help is mightily appreciated!

I don't have one but funny you mention that - I often wonder how big (or little) of a deal it would be to make new jets. The stock is nothing special - brass I guess, so it'd mostly be a matter of getting the diameter and length correct I supposed. I'd like new jets but lack the means to make them and I'm not aware of anyone that makes new ones.

Cheers,
Neil

Look at this page: http://www.robertscarbrepair.com/piccategory.asp?id=362

This is for a JD diesel 2 cyl starting motor but the carb (Zenith TU3X1C) is similar as used on the D2 pony.
If your part is listed, I think you can buy it at your local JD dealer or maybe from Roberts Carb repair?

I cannot vouch for the jets being exactly the same but they probably are. Maybe someone here on the board can chime in and let us know before you buy a part you cannot use.

I hope this helps...

Do you have a Caterpilliar part number? If so, check it out with Caterpillar parts, it may be available.

The only part number Cat provides in the catalog that came with the machine is for the whole carb, not for individual parts...

Boy that does look like a similar carb. If nothing else pans out I will give one of those a try.

I've rebuilt several Cat pony carbs with gaskets and parts I got from the local John Deere dealer. The carb is used on 720-730 starting engines so have your JD parts guy get the old books out and do a bit of digging.

Well since my other potential sources are not panning out, I may try and buy a main jet for that JD Pony. However, I went on a JD forum and found that they talk about their Pony motors turning 7000 RPM (!), and listening to U-Tube of a 720 Diesel being started, it sounded like it! Makes me wonder how good a match the Main jet from that Zenith Carb might be...

Anybody got any insight on this?
