Can't fix stupid.

I'm almost too ashamed to reveal this but..... Last week I decided it was time to bring old D8 15A723 out of hibernation and flex her muscles. Last fall I covered the seat, dash, exhaust (which has a rain cap too), and intake with one of those wonderful blue tarps that never make it to spring. The wind was blowing that day as it always does when I'm blue tarping so I was struggling a bit. To hold one corner I put the s-hook of a bongi on the fan belt. Spring is here so naturally the blue tarp went south weeks ago so I pick up what's left and get the old girl started. It's been converted to 24V start and as always she fires right up. Went down the field to do a little ditch work and it was running just fine as always. Pretty soon I see a little mist out front and a glance at the temp gage says it is just getting into the red which it never does. To make a long story a little shorter, old stupid forgot about the bongi on the fan belt and it took off all the belts and the S-hook went thru the radiator. I never heard a thing because I've got a 5" straight stack that makes beautiful music. I now have a fun job.

Well, as they say "it" happens, so don't kick yourself too hard over it. The first time I got my 5U D2 fired up after hauling it home, cleaning the pony fuel system, adjusting pinion clutch, cleaning diesel system, and pouring in fresh oil and antifreeze, I had something similar happen. The hood was off for bleeding the fuel system and I had the engine turning over. I had noted that the radiator cap was in bad shape, (the stamped tin top had come loose from the lower part that engages the top of radiator) and had made the "mental note" to remove it before starting. Well, with the excitement and expectation of hearing her run for the first time I had forgotten about the loose cap. As soon as the diesel roared to life I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye, then saw the tin cap dancing down the radiator top and approaching the fan. My first instinct was to grab it, but it was already too close to the spinning fan to try so I just watched it fall. It hit a fan blade, bent it right into the radiator core and gashed a half of a circle out of it before siezing. The fan belt was making the worst schreeching noise as I fumbled for the shutoff lever, got her stopped and ran for a catch pan to collect the rivers of antifreeze.

I got to hear her run for about 5 seconds, then had a radiator to fix. Three weeks later I finally had a different core in it and got to drive it around. The darndest thing is that the little tin cap bent the beefy fan blade, but didn't hardly have a scratch in it afterwards. :noidea:
