Wondering if anyone has an original canopy that can be measured and some detailed photos so I can rebuild mine. Also a ruff list of materials to make it as factory correct as possible. I see a picture in the parts book that gives a ruff idea. Seems to me the top was slatted boards when I looked at one as a youngster. Also, Top material was?

probably packing cases. you could use a nice hard wood timber like oak or cedar. i would use spotted gum, yellow stringy bark or ironbark prehaps.

Thanks for that info. Nice thing here is we have a saw mill on the farm so I can cut out whatever materials would be needed. With all these machines still around I would think someone would have one with an original canopy that could be measured and some photos showing original construction. If someone within a days drive has one that I could get some photos of and measurements that would be OK also. I would post the info here so anyone in the future that wanted to could reproduce one to factory specs.

I believe the illustrations in the parts book are to scale. So if you have at least one part on the tractor you can measure, and then measure the PB drawing, you can come pretty darn close. The top was likely covered with canvas glued over the wood, then saturated with paint, very similar to a fabric covered aircraft. I would think the wood strips would have been pretty thin in order to conform to the curvature. Fir would seem to be a good choice similar to old-school porch decking, just a bit thinner.

I sent an email to the Caterpillar visitor center and museum to see if any blue prints may still exist and a bill of materials. If I get anything I'll be sure to post it here. I did include the 8B5903 Canopy Group number and the Top number 8B5805.

you could possibly steam form a bit of ply or a few veneer boards to make that thickness.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
