I am replacing the cable on my D7-3T with a N0. 24 front mounted CCU. It has a 10' blade with a double pulley on the blade and on the nose. With four wraps on the drum, I figure it takes about 35'. Does this sound right? What diameter cable/ rope is right? It had 9/16 on it.

Thanks Old Magnet. I have some used cable, in good condition, and some new tighter wrapped cable (wire rope?) Both appear to be wrapped/twisted in the same direction. What's the difference and which should I use?

I had a 3T with a 10' blade and a #24 CCU. You can get by with 35' but if you go over much of a hump or dip to deep in the ground, it will pull out of the CCU drum clamp.

If this is a user tractor and you're not worried about looks, I would say mount a spool of cable on the fender and run what you need thru the wedge, around the sheaves and into the CCU. Then when it gets worn bad (frayed or breaks) on the CCU end you can cut off a few feet reclamp on drum. You only wear out or use up about half of what it takes to thread it up.

Edit to add: 1/2" is the proper size cable but as old as she is by now the sheaves will probably handle 9/16" alright. BUT... the pulley grooves are probably worn deep and anything bigger than a 1/2" will get excessive wear from the sides of grooves in the pulleys increasing cable wear.

If I could buy some 9/16" or even some 5/8" dirt cheap, I'd use it.

The recommended cable is 1/2 in. 6 x 19 filler wire, right Lang lay, independent wire rope center, preformed, improved plow steel type.
All Cat cable operated equipment except the apron lift cable on scrapers uses this same cable.
