You’ll have to forgive the altered start procedure. My compression jumped up a lot after a days pushing. That brought the pony clutch issue up.

Excellent! Thanks for posting that and a nice commentary on the process and the workarounds for the clutch adjustment too.

Nice clear video. I noticed the oil pressure came up rather slowly compared to what it does on my D4. Is that due to the clutch slippage? On my D4 it jumps up just within a couple of seconds of turning the main engine. Of course my D47u does not have the convenient operator control system as on your D6. 😉 On the D4 I sit on the left track to start the pony and have a hand mirror so I can check the oil pressure before hitting the governor.

Again, great video and nice sounding engine. Just love to hear those pony motors wind up.

The pony sounds like a two stroke.

Well I don’t have a reference but perhaps an explanation might be that it was turning at low idle. The main turns pretty slowly at low idle. I will say that the oil pressure stays way up throughout the day even hot at idle. So I have confidence in it.
Glad you liked the video though. It took forever to upload from my phone.
It’s good to see how it compares to other Cats.

Thanks for posting this Dizzel, good job. I wager you don't realize how hooked you've become on the old school yellow iron. I can see the symptoms of yellow fever showing already! Have you starting thinking about keeping that buzz-bomb now? Are you enjoying showing people how the starting engine works? That will lead to "Heck; any idiot can start a 'dozer with direct electric start, this takes knowledge." The ACMOC strain of yellow fever will progress to the point that you will realize that brand new 'dozer operators have no idea what a direct drive transmission or a steering clutch is, much less a starting engine!
😆
Thanks again,
Craig

Given how fragile it seems that type of pony is, it would probably benefit from some preventative inspection once in a while, such as checking the clearance on the bottom end (or whatever Eddie B says to check on them). They're not very common so having a working unit in every day use is great to see.

Haha. You’re welcome. I have started thinking of keeping it. It depends how it performs in the fall weather. If it starts easy enough and can turn the 525cuin diesel then who knows!

Ha! Craig, There are some as you mentioned that cant even start an electric start diesel! They activate the glow plugs or not even at all for two seconds on a cold engine and just sit there and crank away.

Thank you for sharing the video Dizzel. This is the first “buzz bomb” pony experience that I’m sure many of us have never witnessed until now. I hope yours lasts the life of the tractor. Some complain of the other older/slower revving ponies not being worthy of being part of the tractor, yet yours has survived. You are probably only one of few that has one of these. Curious as to actual engine RPMs of the main during the startup process. 5-6000 rpm buzzer vs. 350?rpm main? The buzz bomb engine speeds had me on edge!
