hey Fellas

I got the engine unstuck, everything looks good, drained a couple of gallons of water out of the engine. So how is the best way to flush the oil system and prepare for start up?

I would take the time to remove the inspection covers on the side of the engine and clean the suction bell(s) and even possibly remove the pump and check the pressure contol valve if the gunk seems to have gotten that far up. Then swab out the pan and wipe everything down with a lint free cloth to remove any sludge you can.

The best way to prime up the system would be to pump the oil into the main oil gallery through as large a port as you can access. Most likely you will be limited to a 1/8" pipe plug. I have also seen pressure pots used to prime one up. I have an old water/compressed air type fire extinguisher I am going to use for doing this. Adding the whole tank full of oil will only be about 5 gallons, but that should do the job. The one I really want to do is turbocharged (D320)and the turbocharger bearing already has been filled with oil by removing the line on top and pouring the oil in.

The other way is to just crank the engine over with the pony motor until oil pressure has built up before opening the throttle. When you have electric start, it may take a bit of "battery" to get it primed up, but by the time you get the fuel system bled, you should have had oil pressure for a while.
