hello im a newbie on the forum. pulled a 9u out of resting and need some help with a few items/problems. okay quite a few problems, this is going to be my go to farm project dozer. my first question is about the steering clutch control levers. i have a service manual for adjustments. but what do i use for the rubber bump stops? they are completely rotted away. i know 3in of play is need at the control levers but thats nearly impossible unless i let the levers rest on the frame. if i dont them the levers pull on the steering clutch assit plungers/rods and throw that adjustment out of spec. ive attached some pics.

I replaced the rubber bumpers on mine. You could still get them from CAT. You will need to remove that casting and fight with the bumpers to get them in, but it can be done.

My parts book says 3B6175 for the bumpers and Fabick Cat Online (Missouri) has them priced at $16.62 each. I replaced them in my 5R D6 and they are a monster to get pushed into place in the bracket. Plenty of silicone spray and a lot of patience will get them pushed in. bboaz

moved on to getting the brakes and steering clutches adjusted. on the brakes is it possible for the bottom support set screws to fall out? if so can they be replaced? what thread bolt and length are they?
when i turn the left brake adjustment bolt it just seems to keep turning without ever drawingup. i know that u dont want to draw it up tight, but it just seems like im not getting anywhere with it. im open to ideas.
thanks ty

Brake bands have been known to rust in two at the bottom from water collecting in the compartments. Or you could have a stripped adjuster. If you take off the seat, you will have a lot better access and can tell a lot more what the problem might be.

Seems like those setscrews are 3/8 coarse thread but I have never had one out to see how long they actually are. They can fall out if the lock nut comes loose. If the threads in the case are bad, it wouldn't hurt to thread to a larger size.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

by case do u mean the frame of the dozer is used to thread and jam the locking nut. or is the set screw threaded onto the brake housing internally. i think my machine has plugs where the setscrew should be. is the location ahead of the large drain holes(one on each side). protected by a band of metal formed into a half moon. if the adjuster is stripped can i replace it through the top cover hole. i can not access the rear inspection plates due to a hyster winch on rear.

The support screws are threaded up through the floor of the steering clutch cases and simply stick up from the floor to keep the brake band from sagging when it is released. That is the location behind that protective piece welded on the bottom of the case. I wonder why they might have been plugged off.

The adjuster and everything else in the clutch compartment is accessed through the top covers.
