Well after having my rebuilt engine sitting in the shop for too long, I really lucked out and found an awesome mechanic to help me go through my transmission and finals so I can get some progress going on the Orchard 15. I will get some pictures up hopefully soon. Today, I didn't have a digital camera with me, but we did find some serious water in the brake compartment on one side. Well, there was pretty much water damage everywhere. This tractor sat outside for a long time in prior years.
I don't know how they didn't fail, but the finals were both removed from the trans assembly without the brake drums snapping. The steering clutches appear to be totally rusted together and not usable. Also with the water in there, lots of rust on the brake bands (they were pretty much rusted to the drums. I could barely turn the sprockets with a 5' bar. Also, one of the final drive housings is going to be replaced since the mounting block that holds the pivot shaft loosened, and appears to have moved around and caused the housing to wear down, changing the alignment of the pivot shaft/made it a little crooked.
I will be looking at getting the parts we need from a parts tractor I have, and I hope the steering clutches, etc. are in good enough shape to use.
I have searched and read every post I could find about this subject on 15's, 22's and D-2's.
Couple questions for anyone who has done a 22 or 15:

1 Brake bands- we are planning on re-lining them. Is there any particular type of lining material that is better to use. I have no idea about if there are harder or softer lining types that would be better to use. Also, is there a material available that is already the correct width for the bands? I have never re-lined any of these before.

2. How about the tranny input shaft seal, p/n V-61. Is this available anywhere?

3. Bellows seals. What is the best way to re-use these? Do most people just carefully remove and cut new cork gaskets for both sides? I see General Gear has new ones available for D2 and 22 p/n 3B5762 & 1A4296. The late 15's (s/n PV 5492 & up) also use 1A4296. But earlier 15's use P/N V-429. My serial number is the earlier type (PV2646) Anyone know if the later type bellows seal will drop into an earlier 15, to allow one of the new seals from General Gear to be used? The sprocket and case are the same part numbers for the early and late seal serial number brake, so I would think it might work.

4. Clutch brake lining. Same question as #1. Any particular lining preferred? Can you just cut sheet lining material to fit and re-rivet? Thickness?

5. Olsen's Gaskets has gaskets available for the transmission and finals for these tractors, and of course I could cut them myself. Are there any drawbacks to just using modern Cat gasket maker to re-assemble instead of using paper gaskets for all the finals and transmission? Any trouble with tolerances, etc. changing by not using paper gaskets?

As always, thanks in advance.

On the bellows seals, all three part numbers, V429, 1A4296, and 3b5762, updates to 5H0424, and 2H1542. Basically they should interchange from the early Fifteen, up through all the D2's etc.

Thanks Josh for the help. Good to know that the new, current production Bellows Seals will fit a fifteen. Its interesting to learn how much interchanges between the Fifteen and Twenty Two's.

Hi,i'm just going through this with my pv15. I have just put it all together this weekend after weeks of waiting for parts. I used ferodo brake band it was 3" wide x 29" long and i think its 3mm thick and i got 50 brass rivits. You cut it to length clamp it with g clamps right the way round the band making sure its tight and strait and drill then counter sink it. I got a bit of bar the same size as the rivits head and clamped it in the vise, then put the head of the rivit on the bar and then got a centre punch and tapped it into the end of the rivit then once it opened up tap it with a hammer to flattern the rivit.
The bellow seals in mine were different on both sides,i went to a seal shop that makes seals in my area and they machined some Polyurethane (i think it was) to the same size as the cork was. Then i drilled it a little to fit over the studs and then glued the other one on.
The clutch lining on mine was ok but the friction disks were rusty so i blasted them and they were ok.
The tranny seal i'm not sure about,do you have a pic??
Gaskets i bought a roll of vegetable paper it was 1mm thick x1metre x 5metres long and its done all the gaskets on the machine and there is lots left. Grease the surface first tho. It cost me £40
I'm just putting it back togeter now as i have blasted it and stripped everything. Every nut and bolt on the machine has been out and replaced if needed. I have just started stripping the track frame now as my transmision is now back together and i'm waiting for the engine to come back as the valve seats were rusty and need cutting. The crank was pitted and needs polishing. And the bores were worn so they need boreing out and liners putting in.
Any help you need i'll try my hardest to help, thanks stew

Olsen does a good job with gaskets. Good to work with.

Tailseat 15-

I rebuilt my clutch brake after going to a hotrod clutch and tranny shop. He gave me a piece of lining material large enough for me to cut the two semicircles to fit the metal backing. I fastened it on with brass flathead machine bolts after countersinking for the heads. It was a easy job once I had the material (I also found it on McMaster-Carr catalogue) but "free" was cheaper and I did not need very much. After adjusting it to the correct set of holes, it works fine.

Good luck-Jan PV 7207- thanks for the PM

do you have a description of this material so I may be able to acquire some?

Update:
I received an email back with part number list of the final drive set of gaskets from Olsen's Gaskets for the big 15 and 22. It shows the V-61 input shaft seal as part of the set, so I'm going to contact them in the morning get it ordered. (after hours right now) Has anyone else used a set of gaskets from Olsen's with the input shaft seal? Any feedback? Oh and they list the cork and felt seals also for the bellows seals. I don't have the part numbers with me right now, but hopefully that will work to renew my bellows seals ok also.

12 hours ago, this was a tractor:

Steering clutches very rusty:

Transmission housing and relined brake bands:

Received gasket set today with new input shaft seal and bellows seal cork gaskets and felts. Hopefully they will work good (looks very nice). We are hoping to use the steering clutches from the parts tractor, as the ones in the orchard tractor were/are very rusty and swelled. I have called around to find someone who has relined these 15's or 22's in the past for steering clutches, but no luck yet. Does anyone here know the clutch pack thickness measurements for new thickness and 100% worn out?
