I have been helping my 9 year old son go over his cat 20 sn pl350 it has sat for probably 20 years or more. We had it running last night! But it pumped all the oil out of the crankcase and put it in the filter compartment I guess. We changed the oil and removed the felt filters and backflushed them with gas then let them dry for 3 days. Reinstalled them dumped 3 quarts of oil on top of them and dumped 5 quarts in the crankcase it was half way on the add mark. It sat for over a week like that while we cleaned the carb and made gaskets for it. We started it last night and I checked the oil after a while and the stick is dry! Pulled the filter cover off 12 hours later and it was full of oil and the oil pan still dry. I thought if I unthreaded the filters the oil would run back into the pan no such luck. Could maybe a check ball that only flows with the filter threaded in and the felt filter has been compressed to the point that oil can't gravity flow through it. Not sure what to do but the darn thing runs pretty good. Thanks for the help.

I seem to remember there was a port that allowed filtered oil to drain back to the pan but its been a while. I set mine up with Fram filters.

There is a tube in the filter housing but I rolled the engine over and oil pumps out of it. I switched to a 3rd oil pressure guage. It red over 30 psi! I believe that is way higher than what everyone else has reported on this forum.

I thought the tube was over flow only or a bypass. So the oilflows up through the center of the filter out into the compartment then in the tube?

I would check the clutch housing and the valve cover (think that is an overhead valve engine?). Seems odd that 2 gals of oil would fit in the filter housing? My understanding is that the felt filters were bypass filters, not full flow. Please correct me if I am wrong?
If indeed all the oil is in the filter compartment, then remove the felts and try it again. This would eliminate them as the problem.

The inspection plug for the bell housing has a small hole drilled in it. No oil leakage from there. I considered it holding up in the valve cover. I would think it would have drained back after a couple of days and the gasket has absolutely no leaks. I suppose the filter compartment could hold 2 gallons. I am going to drain the filter compartment and check out the springs and balls.

Thanks this does help. Modern filters flow from the outside in. I have read about 3 different places these flow from the inside out! That was messing with me. Thanks I will be back on this project in a couple days.
