Cat originally called for CD oil in the crankcase, transmission, bevel gear, steering clutch and final drives
above 32* F it called for SAE 30 except for the final drives SAE 50
since then Cat has come out with a much better oil for the powershift transmission and pedal steering clutches
I did talk to the Cat dealer and while not very helpful mumbled that TO-4 was recommended. Any thought on that? Thanks.
Yes--that is what I switched to for the transmission and steering clutches--using 30 wt oil
its suppose to have better friction capability where you have oil clutch plates and increase the life also
TO-4 is suitable for all transmission compartments including the bevel gear, we used to use 30w right through the transmission and final drives through the 1960's '70's and 80's and the 941 comes well within this era.
Thank you dpendzic andcatsilver form your advice. I felt 30W was too thin for final drives. Now I know it is OK. Thanks again.
I don't agree with Catsilver--30 wt oil seems way to thin to me for a final drive--so i don't use it there
when i worked at the dealer, we had major customers (multibillion dollar companies) and they ran 5w30 in every single compartment on every single machine, whether it was a pipelayer, excavator, bulldozer or backhoe. they ran all breeds of equipment, cat, JD, Hitachi, kobelco, komatsu, bell, they ran small stuff from d3 d4 size bulldozers and pipelayers to the big stuff, d9's, d-10's, and 80 ton excavators. operators weren't the brightest or best and they didn't have increased downtime from irregular wear due to oil selection. we would have known about it.
i agree a person should always consult the owners manual and use the manufacturers recommended fluid. But there are circumstances where a person can use oil different to the manufacturers specs, but generally this is done with known risks, and for a specific reason.
you would be wise to listen to catsilver!
