Well now that my D6 is running . . . We're into winter and out of daylight. With the switch back to standard time and our northern lattitude, the sun is setting at 4:30. Ugh. The generator on my D6-9U (S/N 1417) appears to be long since dead. It's belt driven, and seems to spin okay, but that's about it.

It would be really nice to have some lights on this beast. Any thoughts about the sanest way to swap out the generator for an alternator? (I read the thread on gear driven units, but that doesn't seem to apply -- at least not directly)

To replace a large framed generator like was common on the older equipment, you can usually fit an alternator off a large truck to the same wide spaced mount. The larger alternators will probably take a larger variety of pulleys than the standard Delco, Ford, Chrysler, or Motorolla automotive designs. A heavy truck parts supplier or junk yard would be a good source if you don't already have one sitting out back.

If you want to go with a compact alternator, the Delco 10SI is about the standard for the type and are commonly available and usually pretty cheap. You will likely have to make a bracket or make modifications to the existing one to use one of these and find a pulley that fits the belt.

A picture of the current generator would be interesting if you can post one. I guess it was standard before the gear drive generators came in? Or maybe a later addition?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks. I've got an early unit, so I suspect it's original -- pre-gear driven. I don't have any old trucks kicking around, so I'll have to do some external scrounging, or put together a bracket. I'll post a picture once I get back home -- I'm on the road this week.

Just find a good stock generator and convert it to 12 volts with external regulator, lights will be a little dim at an idle but it'll work.😊

jw45 - That's nice workmanship. Does the alternator and mountings stand up to the vibrations and shaking of the tractor, O.K.?

yes it seems to hold up very well now as far as the generator is concerned it is a stock gm generator used on these machines the gens off the 50 model d cars and trucks will bolt up to the front housing but this alt conversion is a whole lot better
