What do you prefer to use in your machines? I hate lugging around the 4Ds or even worse the 8Ds so I usually swap them out for group 31s when there time is up. It seems you can get as many CCAs from a 31 as you can from a 4D. Why would you deal with the larger batteries?

Good question. I have an Optima AGM 6v battery on my D2 - it's tiny but it seems to pack the same wallop as a 12v battery twice its size. I'd guess that it's relative to the efficiency of the chemical process when drawing current. More surface area might be one factor. Thinner plates enable more surface area within the same form factor but of course are not as robust. All speculation : )

I to don't like the very heavy batteries, use 31 series in my D4D instead of 4Ds .They work fine ,cost less.

I have 2 group 31 batteries for my 24v direct start system I put on my D6 5R.

They are 1200CCA, 100AH, and I think they weigh about 70-80lbs a piece. I think they are a bit overkill for how I use them. I can crank the engine for a while with these batteries.

I think they are meant for starting large diesel truck engines that have things like glow plugs to help with starting.

Electricity is electricity. You could probably trade out the 4D battery for 4 D cell batteries and they would start your tractor. You would probably just get one crank and the batteries would be drained though.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
