Howdy,

I'm looking to give some care to my newly acquired D4 7U. I'm having trouble finding a clear answer after doing a lot of searching.

My manual has a neat chart that says how often to lube every different point of lubrication and what to use. It has separate definitions and applications for Ball and Roller Bearing Lube vs Track Roller Lubricant. It seems as though these are no longer made as they were when the manual was printed.

For most of the points of lubrication, track roller frame inner and outer bearings, steering clutch release bearing, fan bearings, flywheel clutch pilot bearings, and steering clutch control lever shaft bearings, it specifies ball and roller lubrication, which it defines as a mixture of mineral oil and metallic soaps, and says to use No. 2 grade, or No. 0 or No. 1 for low temps (and winter is coming...). I haven't been able to figure out what this is, because every time I search this it seems to steer to track roller lube.

It defines track roller lubricant as a stringy, tacky, semi-fluid. There are a lot fewer places where it says to use this, specifically the front idlers, track rollers, and track carrier rollers. This is what seems to come up in all the searches, and it sounds like Corn Head grease would fit the bill. Is that a suitable product?

What should I get to use as ball and roller bearing lube?

I apologize for the newby questions. I'm finding out that if I walk into the local tractor store and ask them, they have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about.

If you use the search function in the top right side of your screen, you will see this question has been answered many times. Just get molybdenum grease for all zerks except for the rollers. Use Chevron Dura-lith 00 on the rollers.

if the seals in your rollers are bad and they won't hold oil then your only answer is to use a thicker oil that won't run out. i use corn head grease in mine and it works fine. i am speaking of the bottom rollers only. as for the rest of the machine you can stay with the recommended grease or oil.

D46U straight blade,D46U cat angle blade,allis chalmers AD4 grader and Khoering 404 dragline. D4C 40A,D4 2T and scraper.

No. 2 grease should be easy to find. Grab a tube of bearing grease and it probably says NLGI No. 2 on the label.

"Corn head" grease is No. 0 and "Cotton Picker" grease is No. 00.

You can order 00 grease through Walmart of all places.

Never use moly grease on rolling surfaces like roller bearings. It is only to be used on sliding surfaces. Moly is microscopic balls which are hard on rollers.
