I think I may have a bad fuel injection pump on my 17A. I recently ran it out of fuel and thanks to some help from this board was able to get the air out of it and get it started again. I noticed that when I cracked the pumps open to get the air out of the system the 2nd injector from the right didn't spurt any fuel out like the others. I tried it again last weekend and all the others spurt fuel out except that one. Is there a way to troubleshoot this and tell if the pump is bad or maybe it is clogged somewhere?

Hey reiderhollander,

I had a tractor I was asked to help get running after it ran out. After putting fuel in it, and bleeding it, it had same symptoms. One pump wouldn't bleed hardly anything. I took a small wire and fished around in the bleed screw hole. I must have poked just right as a blob of snot blew out and fuel was rushing out then. Open the bleed screw a few turns. Fish some stiff wire into the bleed hole. Hopefully it will work.

Very good advice.

If that doesn't fix it. I think the 17a still has a plate on the side of the injection pump housing that you can remove and watch the plungers go up and down.

If you have one stuck up, it will have the rack locked and that will be a big problem if you were to start it. Spray the stuck one with WD-40 or similar and pry it gently back down and up etc until it works freely with the spring keeping the lifter on the cam at all times as the engine rolls over. The rack should also move freely back and forth. If not, gently work it loose while spraying the bushings on either end of the housing.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

What Andrew said. With engine running crack injector line nut on suspect pump. If pump is ok you will hear engine draw down and start to miss. If pump is faulty you will have no change in sound. Wear gloves, protective eyewear etc.
