I feel like I've been all over this pony motor on the D2 I bought about 4 months ago. Learning a lot, and almost feel like I'm starting to take steps forward.

Magneto coil (yes, only one) was replaced and the pony started up in a couple of cranks. Ran better than I've heard it but only lasted about 2 minutes before it started to sputter and die. Pulled a plug and it was very, very wet = flooded. I started to play some more with it but it really starting to come down (rain) and I was already soaking wet. Decided to call it for the day and pick it up again next trip to the hills.

New Question:

I've learned through this forum that there are two types of main jet adjustment screws on the Carb. The vertical one where all the way in cuts off the gas, and the horizontal one where all the way out cuts it off. I happen to have the horizontal adjustment screw and now I'm wondering how you know when it is sufficiently unscrewed enough to get in the ball park for the right mixture. The recommendation for the vertical one is to screw it all the way in and then back it off 1 turn to start. How do I get to a good starting point with the horizontal one?

I still have the brand new Champion plugs in but I'm going to be replacing them shortly so I can eliminate that too from the possible problems.

Not sure what I'm going to do when all of the pony motor problems are behind me. Maybe I'll get to drive the tractor and push dirt? Naaaa...what fun would that be. 😊

Starting point adjustment on the side screw model is screw in gently as far as possible and then back off one turn.

OM, That surprises me. If all the way out with the screw is lean, then going in all the way, and backing out one turn would be rich. Is the information about the difference between vertical and horizontal adjustment screws wrong?

Thanks, Larry

Does read a little strange but your coming at it from the open side instead of the usual thinking closed position.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
