I have fitted to my Cat D7C 17A an Armstrong Holland towing winch.
I know that Armstrong Holland made several earthmoving implements such as cable control towed rippers and are long gone as a company. What I don't know is much about this winch other than the pulling speed, (cable coming in on top of the drum), is lower than the paying out speed and that it has a band type brake and that there must be a worn dog clutch in the gearbox because it works itself out of gear on a long pull, or quicker if the pull is particularly heavy. The winch is a biggun and holds 50 yds of 1" wire rope. Controls are manual and consist of two levers coming out of the top of the winch and operating in a horizontal plane above the fuel tank. One controls the band brake and the other operates the forward, neutral, reverse mechanism.
Does anyone here know much about Armstrong Holland. Ideally I would like to find a manual so that I may have at least some guide as to its internals.
The parts manual for my Dozer says D7D winch, which is a Hyster model I believe, but the name cast into the winch is Armstrong Holland so perhaps it is not the original fitment.
I will post a picture once I can get to the machine.

Could be a WR18 as fitted to TD18's, high speed on overwind and low speed on underwind. Should not be able to come out of gear as the lever that engages the gear has a lock on it. I have an old WR18 down the back that I would be happy to part with as have no further use for it.

That's interesting, the controls on mine have a ratchet lock for the brake, but the gear selector has no lock.
Poring with rain at the moment so photos will have to wait a bit longer.
