As I am little by little dismantling my 7U, I am anticipating repairing damaged threads. Any preferred types? I remember a certain kind that had I think four little "stakes" to lock the insert into the oversized hole. I've used heli coil but not super impressed. Some inserts also are quite "thick" if that makes sense, which limits their application. Just pondering so I can start looking for when this all goes together. Thanks

Time-Serts work the best for me. I dislike heli-coils. The thicker inserts use the four locking pins you are talking about.
I exclusively use Time-Serts and for replacing helicoils I use Big-Serts.

I've used E-ZLoks successfully on my 5U. They come in different lengths and thicknesses, in addition to the hole size. They are prepped with threadlock but that didn't seem to work too well for me, even with the hole clean and dry. I staked them instead

They all have their place, depends on what your trying to achieve and the application.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
