Greetings all. Who knew becoming a land developer would find me owing such a variety of heavy equipment but here I am again with my potential acquisition of an Allis Chalmers HD16DP-7748. I do not know for certain but I am going to put this around the 1967/68 vintage. It's certainly larger than my D6.
I went to check this bad boy out and it is in unbelievably great shape... everything works very well accept an issue with what I believe to be the transmission. The current owner explained that the unit would not move when he purchased it. Found the transmission dry... no fluid. They filled it up and that got it to moving. Over time it has retreated into a process of firing up the motor... than working the forward/reverse back and forth until the machine begins to move... initially it will move about 10 feet in both direction and then build up as you continue to cycle back and forth. Ultimately it will reach a point that it will move well for the day until such time you shut it down and let it sit. You then will have to repeat the process. I have ordered a complete sent of manuals for it but do not have them yet. Thought I would look to see if there was an A-C old timer on here that could lend some pointers.
That machine I believe has a wet clutch. And if memory serves me right there were a lot of problems with the clutch. But I don’t think it to be a major job to tear into them. And also parts might be an impediment. I think with the right helper it be doable.

Hey guys,
Thank you for the replies. I have registered on allischalmers.com and listed the same post there. Looking forward to any response. I've had others suggest that I run... don't walk... away from this purchase. Finding it hard to do either as the price is very attractive and it is in great shape other than the issue I described above. It's likely that if I can get it on a low boy I will go ahead and purchase it if I can narrow down where the problem lies. I have a need for the monster rake and the 4 way blade on this unit that my D6 does not have.
If you could research flywheel options, you might be able to fit a generic clutch if that's what the problem is, like a truck Spicer or similar. Then parts would be a doddle.
I would guess just about all the yellow from the factory AC crawler are a power shift transmission. As AC kept the orange color on direct drive ag models. There is a very knowledgeable guy in Redwood valley still running a lot of AC construction equipment. He is Mel something on the AC board. He posted some video of working on his AC's that are linked to the AC site. And several others in the mid west seem to know a lot.
My uncle ran several AC HD 21's and a HD 16. He was very handy and did 99% of his own mechanic work. In the late 90's I helped pull a transmission on 21. It had lots of hours but most of them not grunting to hard. He ran the city of Paso Robles landfill. But also build stock water ponds or tanks as they are known in some places. I was just muscle on the transmission rebuild. At that time parts were available if you knew where to look.

Hi all,
I visited Mell Ford's youtube channel but could not even find a listing of comments any longer. It's been a while since I used youtube but did they remove comments from the video pages? I also could find no means to get in contact with him through his channel. Very odd. I pulled up his profile and found no means to do so through it either. Will keep looking.
Ok... figured it out. Seems youtube will not work with those using browser variants that are derived from the generic version of Chrome. I hate Google with a passion! Will see if Mel responds. Hope so.
