Working on this side mounted pony with the 3 5/8 bore. One of the bores is too corroded to clean up. So I have the option to sleeve the bore or bores to use the stock size piston, or I might be able to find some O/S pistons & rings. What do you guys think about the options, cost vs results, etc. Thanks,,

Stephen.
I recently re sleeved a corroded bore on a vertical starting engine .Total cost was about $50 for the sleeve and several 6 packs to share with my neighbour.
Who owns the boring machine. Sleeves are un finished . You final bore them to 5tho. over piston size.
Cost effective will depend on if you are buying new parts or re using old pistons, access to your neighbors boring machine etc.
Measure every thing to see if it is within spec.
A lot of these engines are already sleeved, in which case they can be either bored out and the sleeve replaced or bored oversize.
The attached photos have been posted in a previous post..
Hope this helps.

Hi Stephen, I had a D2/D4 pilot motor sleeved by a engine shop last year and it cost $150 for one cylinder, there is a company here in Oz who make new pistons for your pilot motor and I've bought them too, they were around $US100 each for the piston, rings, gudgeon and circlips and are available up to 80 thou oversize, you just tell them what size your bore is and they machine the piston to suit, they have a good reputation. Google JP Pistons Adelaide Australia, I just got home last night from a week over there and will be back over there within a month or three I'm sure, it's about 400 miles west of me, if I can help don't be afraid to sing out.
Regards
Mike

Hi Stephen, I've also bought pistons from JP and they shipped them to me here in NY very reasonably. They worked perfectly and I'm very happy with them (this is on my D2 pony)

G,Day Mike ,
Ya could have saved your money and done the boring job here. Only would have cost 3 or 4 cartons.

I'll keep that in mind for the future Andrew if I need any boring done. I could supply my own machinist if need be. Lol. That loading ramp looks like a bit of a short notice knock up good idea.

I think I dodged the bullet here, I honed the bores and got them mostly cleaned up, with a scattering of dark areas. They measure 3.630 ish and feeler gauge at .010 with the used pistons. I think with a new set of rings all will be well. Hard to believe after how bad they looked at first.

Yeah you would be most welcome. My neighbor Cornie, has an amazing array of equipment and enjoys nothing better than seeing like minded people
getting some use from it.
And yes that was not a good day. Finished up in a real mess. The truck kept going down deeper. The more we tried to dig it turned into soup.
There is a video of the day but I haven't worked out the U tube thing yet.

Stephen.
I am sure the starting engine will run fine ..
The bores on my 8R looked horrid after I hammered the pistons out . Onlookers comment that it is the quietest pilot motor they have ever heard...

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
