I recently bough a D25J and the pony motor is set up and needs to rebuild but i dont have the time or money right now. My friend has a big enough tractor where i think we can tow start it. Is there any tricks or concerns when doing this? Thanks Roy

I've done it before years ago when I had a 3J. Put it in 3rd or 4th gear so you are not spinning the engine too fast (and makes it easier to tow too). Pull it a couple hundred feet or so under compression and then open the throttle. Be ready to disengage the clutch when it fires!

Good Luck!πŸ‘

P.S. A bit of advice from past experience: Don't let your tow chain get pinched between the grousers.:jaw:

drain the water out of the block if its been sitting long.
pull it all u can decompressed it get oil pressure up and make sure u got it, also note if u got fuel pressure.

then take a break, i'd pull it under decompress with fuel on, its more important to me to have oilpress before putting compression on. when towing, rig it up using compression to start.
good luck

first thing above all else is ensure the master clutch isn't frozen, otherwise you'll be up the sphincter of that tractor real quick. easiest way disengage clutch, select a gear and turn main motor over at fan. if the dozer starts moving you've got a stuck clutch.

Always a good idea to drain the engine crankcase and other gear cases enough to ensure there is no water and or chunks of metal before you move it far. Also great to lube the rollers etc in place if possible.

I would say definitely turn the engine over a couple turns with the fan or with a bar etc before you pull start it. It would be easy to bend a connecting rod if one cylinder had some liquid in it. I bet you could even bend one with the compression release pulled if you were unlucky.

If the main clutch is stuck, you could still pull start it, or better yet push it off and then you can try to break the clutch loose by working it. Starting will be easier in high gear and that would also make it easier to slip a stuck clutch. You just have to have the pulling tractor in a high enough gear to outrun the CAT if you pull it.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
