I have a problem with my D2 5u pony motor. It starts and runs well but,(and that's a BIG but!) it's recently started overfilling its self with oil. Not in a good way! I'm getting water/anti freeze out of the big engine! I think coolant can only get to the pony crankcase through the pony head gaskets or the pony manifold gasket. Well, the compression check on the pony motor shows 65 on the left and about 68 on the right. I think I got something amiss under the manifold. Does this sound right? What do some of the rest of you guys think? I think the first of the week I'll start un-dressing the pony unless some one else has a better place to look...
It's sad I know but, on the bright side..., Hummm, guess there ain't much of a bright side...

Hey j Mclean,

Are you saying that the oil in the pony is milky white with water in the oil? I am trying to understand your post.

The pony only holds a quart. When in doubt just drain and refill with fresh oil.

Yes. Milky white oil in the pony crankcase. About 2 quarts of it. I drained it and refilled with one(1) quart of new oil then started the pony and the main (big) engine. When the pony shut off,(died, ran ou'ta gas), I checked the oil in the pony again and it's milky and about a quart and a half! The whole starting process didn't take 10 minutes. Gained a half a quart in 10 minutes time. And, it's milky again.
The pony starts and runs good but it has started to slobber oil out the exhaust in the last few months... Also, did I mention the main radiator is down a little, below the core and it hasn't leaked coolant at all in the past. I've not had a chance to work on it yet but I am hoping that a new gasket or some thing like that will fix it..., hope,hope,hope...

I'll try that first but, don't really think it's the head or head gasket because the compression is good,(better than 65# actually) and even, not 5# difference, side to side. But, checking the head torque is an easy place to start. I'll try it.

make sure its not gas from the carb float needle and seat not working. a common problem.

You should draine the antifreeze and check the head gasket or a crack head and in same time check the water passage in the head and the block they maybe clogged

You know, I had thought of that but then I dismissed the idea because it doesn't seem to use that much gas..., but I know it's possible. The gas angle is something I had better check out before I tear the whole thing apart! I always run the pony out of gas to shut it off and, if it was flooding that much gas down the carburetor while it was running, I wouldn't think the pony would run at all, especially not as good as it does... Well, I have a big project going before I can look into the Cat but I plan to start to fix it this week. I'll keep you guys posted. And thanks for the suggestions and moral support.

If the oil in the pony is milky white looking it is water not gas. Gas will dilute it but it will still look oily colored.
