Hello once again, I have a few questions. I have a 1946 D6 4R. The hours meter shows 1860 (sorry maybe five digits but those are the first). That seems like low hours for a 60 something year old machine. Do these hour meters "go out" or stop working or could they be reversed easily. I don't know that's why I'm asking. The tracks and pins seem original and plenty of life. Thanks for your time. I appreciate all the info I can get on this machine.

Yes, the hour meters do quit and get replaced through the years. You will know more about it by looking at things like brake pedal wear. But in reality, how much wear is left in tracks and undercarriage and how well it starts and runs is more important to you than how many hours it has done. Got any pictures?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thank you ccjersey. That's what I was thinking. I cant seem to upload pics, but I know the tracks still have plenty of life in them and the pins don't seem too flat spotted. Looking at the brakes are my next check and not sure where they are located at. I'm replacing the ring gear at the moment and just saw that the bendix gear is pretty chewed up as well. and I hear I have to remove the pony motor to get to that gear. ohh well ill have it running sometime. thanks again. norcal.

Look at the diamond pattern on the Brake Pedals to see how much "Foot Time" they have. This is an indicator of hours of use. If you are in at the ring gear right now, its a good time to go through the clutch and its components. Wear on shafts and linkages down inside of there are also good indicators of use.

Hi, You may be interested to know that these tractors started in production in 1941 and finished in 1947.
Production break down - 1941 - 496. 1942 - 647. 1943 - 1,620. 1944 - 516. 1945 - 504. 1946 - 716 and 1947 - 162. This makes a total 4 R tractors built = 3,633 machines.
Hope that this is of interest to you.
