Did Caterpillar start their serial numbers at Number 1 or Number 501, like all the farm implement companies did? Mine is 874, so I'm just wondering how near the first it was. My second question: Is this a factory cab from Cat or an after market cab? I've been told both by "so-called" experts. Can't find a serial number or a tag of any kind on it. And I've never seen one like it.

nice tractor!
where is your serial # located? I can't find it on my E. I assumed it is now covered by the added rear Hyster.

Interesting cab style - almost like one of those old-school D9 cabs. I think most serial # ranges started with 1 but there were some exceptions. Someone here will have some examples I'm sure

my research shows that the D7E models-47A,48A,79A,and 95A all started with serial #'s 85 or 159, depending on model

1961 47A00874. That would be another manufacturer cab. The serial number should be on the engine block just above the starting engine transmission hi-low gear shifter, if electric start then above the starter. You can get service and operating manuals from Cat or on ebay.

All D7E models start out at #1.

Several sites seem to make use of the "Toughquip" Caterpillar Equipment Buyer Information Guide which is chuck full of errors.

Most Cat serial numbers started with #1.its just that the first few were sometimes 'seed' machines put out with customers for testing.

Hello farmerfred, as others have stated Caterpillar serial numbers always start at 1. I could see the master clutch lever in photo 2 so your machine is a direct drive, your serial number is 47A874. D7E 47A1 through 47A3395 are the low horse(160hp). Please note that the inner sprocket hubs for the 160hp D7E are no longer available from any source new and are VERY rare used. Proper maintenance of the final drives and sprocket bearings is critical.
I suggest it is a good idea to obtain the correct manuals for your tractor from ebay or other sources.
I also noted that your tractor is equipped with a No. 171 Hydraulic Control which is for a tilt cylinder on a Cable Control blade.

I purchased the manuals in the pic from ebay also check the For Sale/Wanted section of this site.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
