Run tractor to get it to operating temp, stop engine and remove hood and
valve cover. Next remove cover over timing marks on flywheel and turn engine to one of the two TDC marks. They are numbered 1&4 and 2&3. One of the two cylinders listed will be at TDC of the compression stroke. Usually both the rocker arms will be loose on the cylinder you will adjust and one or both valves will be open with tight rocker arms on the one you can't. Adjust the intake and exhaust to 0.010" clearance. Note that you can release the compression to turn the engine easily, but don't forget to switch back to RUN before adjusting.

Turn engine 1/2 turn and adjust another cylinder.

Repeat
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Just roll the engine over until one of your valves opens and adjust the intake/exhaust that's still closed. If your intake valve is open, your exhaust valve has to be closed on that cylinder and vice/versa, no magic on these D315s. Set them to .010 hot. I set mine to .012 when it was cold cause I had it apart.

All 4 cycle engines, except 3 or 5 cylinder, have pistons that have a running mate----153624 take the last 3 cylinders and move them under the first three 153
624 So one and six are running mates and so on. When you see an exhaust valve close, you'll then see an intake open while rolling the engine over in direction of rotation. At that time you are near TDC, go to opposite cyl and set the valves both at the same time. You can start on any cyl. Example, you see #two exhaust closing and the intake opening, set vales on #five. When I was a young pup, I used to write the firing order on side of manifold so I could keep it all straight. Works Great!!!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
