They are real old style tools and the one piece one that has been used for years and is the 3H1690 tool and is so easy to use. They came out probably the early 1950s and you just line up the notch on the rack with the one on the wheel (gear) on the tool and check the reading by just touching the rack on the spring or stop back in the gov. housing.Probably your dealer would loan one to you.

jw45 - The tool numbers you have furnished, are for rack setting on the 4" and 4 1/2" bore engines.

5F9071 is a rack setting block, and 5F9068 is a rack setting arm.

Here is the procedure for use of the rack setting tools on the 4" and 4 1/2" bore engines, from the Fuel Injection Pump Housings Service Reference Book.

You need to post your tractor S/N, so that someone such as OM, Eddie B, Bruce Oz, myself, or other ACMOC regulars, can provide precise rack settings for your tractor S/N, from the Rack Setting book, if you propose to use either tools.

As SJ said those block and gauge tools are obsolete and have been for some time. The 3H1690 rack setting gauge is the standard now. The tool is/was still available from Cat....for about $300😮 ....they occasionally show up on ebay but you may be waiting a long time.

You could still use the old tools but you will have to add 1.115 in. to get correct readings. I have no idea what the fabrication dimensions are but might still be available through Cat archives if you can get someone to pursue it.

If you manage to acquire the 3H1690 gauge I can post the instructions for use if you need them.

Correction:
Make that about $350!!!!!!

All the instructions you need is line the notch up on the rack with the one on the tool and pull the throttle on and when the rack linkage touches the stop or spring back inside the Gov. housing read the numbers on the dial of the tool and there you got it, very simple and easy. It,s a good idea to have the rear gov. cover off if it has a torque spring in it so that you just touch the flat spring but some just have a bar stop but most the wafer (flat) spring.

The rack setting for it is .215 with a 5F6413 spring and a 9F4113 nozzle and with a 5F1941 spring is .125 setting. I found the 5F6413 spring the best with those engines and the RPMs need to be set at 1535 RMs high idle and 550 RPMs low idle.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
