Question for Old Magnet? How availble are parts, / gaskets, etc, for a 9U D6 SN #9U27566? I was in the shop the other day and notice a small amount of anitfreeze on the floor, getting under the tractor it appears its coming from the water pump. Closer inspection will involve pulling the hood to get a good look at it. Tractor has a hardnose on it, therefore that makes it a little more difficult to see where the leak is.

One last question how sucessful have you been in using a spanner wrench to undo the fan hub, I remember reading that the holes where the clips fit to adjust the belt a spanner wrench can fit in there?

Have not called Western States Cat yet, but any parts sources would be appreciated.

Thanks much

Hi Woody,
I'm not aware of any problems getting water pump parts.....but I haven't bought in awhile.

Spanner works good for adjustment but not busting loose a froze up hub.

If you're needing to move the adjustment on the fan pulley, take the lock bolts and tabs out and then use a short extension from a socket set, or a 1/2" bolt about 2.5" or 3" long and put it between the back of the pulley and a bolt or other knob on the front of the water pump. Grab fan blade with other hand and put pressure on it so it is caught. Then you can really put some pressure on the asjustment nut. I used to try to use a hammer and a drift on them and every one I have ever seen has been treated this way, but you can usually do a lot more just pulling on the fan blade.

It may be obvious to you, but do not remove the back of the water pump housing, only take out the front part with the impeller, shaft and hub in it. There are some really challenging bolts holding the rear part of the housing onto the head and the block!
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Regal had the repair kit available a year or so ago at a better price than from Cat.It had everything you would need except for a impeller.Hopefully you will not need one of those because that was a Cat only part, and they think it is gold plated.

Ray, if you do need an impeller and you can't find one elsewhere you'll be happy Cat still has parts available......even if they are gold plated.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for information and advice, great stuff as usual. The fan belt adjustment with the two hubs wasn't one Cats better ideas, they changed that on the 28,000 series 9U's to a double V- belt with a idler tighner. I would buy one of those in a heart beat if lucky enough to find one that was being parted out. Way back my Dad almost bought a 1959 D69U, they made quite a few suttle changes that year prior to coming out with the D6B.

I will let you know what the source of the leak is once we get her opened up a little more. Thanks again for the posts, this a great sight for old Cat lovers like myself.

Best,

Woody

Yup your pictures are what the unit looks like. I have only ever seen one myself, that particular machine also had hydraulic track adjusters on it as well, not as big a deal as the upgraded fan belt adjustment but nice to have.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
