Hey guys, a old farmer down the road has 2 9us sitting in his field. I talked with him last night and he told me I could have them if I got them running and he could use one for a week. Iv not seen these dozers up close enough yet to get SN or see if they are dry clutch dozers. He says one over heated and cracked the head and the other had a final drive issue and both have been sitting. Now I'm not afraid to work on equipment engines and all, but are these gona be worth the time? They are both rear mount CCU dozers. I'm just scared of getting into a dry clutch dozer since I had so many issues with the last one I had. He cannot tell me if they are dry clutch units but said he never had any issues with clutches. Y'all just let me knkw what y'all think if a cracked head has to be replaced or a block.

Not that it couldn't be cracked, but that wasn't as common as precombustion chamber leaks. Results are similar, combustion gas pushing into the cooling system, so i would bet on one or more leaking precombustion chamber. The good side is that would usually be repairable without pulling the head.

On the other hand, its a lot of heavy work, but swapping a final from the one with a bad engine to the other one is a known quantity with a very high probability of having an operable machine in the end.

You may do a bunch of work on the precombustion chambers etc and still wind up swapping a head if it is cracked. I would make a careful assessment of the two machines taking into account known problems, oil clutch, track and undercarriage condition etc before I dove off into this project.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The only thing I would add would be, if you decide to go ahead and fix one, get the agreement in writing before you put a wrench on them. It would be the pits to fix his cat then suddenly it’s worth money cause it runs.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

The thoughts Bruce expressed were my first thought. The next was what kind of work and what kind of operator is he. A lot of damage can be done in a week with a poor operator,or one that doesn't care.

The 8/9u's where all over here and have never heard of a cracked head. But copper gasket of the precombustion chambers leaking is common.

Your chances of them having a wet clutch is very good as there are more wet 9u's than dry as well as converting dry to wet was common.

If there is usable undercarriage sounds like only sweat and smashed finger are needed to make a runner with what is there.

But you know the Yellow Fever members are rooting you put your neck out there and save them. Good luck. But do not let Yellow Fever over take good judgement in all the aspects of this opportunity.

I agree with Bruce. Get something documenting your agreement. I have experienced one case too many of sellers remorse. Paid for dead tractors (yes, paid) get them alive for loadout, only to have seller have a cerebral flatulence issue upon seeing and hearing the tractor running. Wth? A deal is a deal in my book, but some people tend to think differently when they get exposed to exhaust fumes. Btw, I use my trailer winch or bring a big forklift for loading now.....
Hope you get your tractors. Keep us posted.

Thanks everybody, I knkw the old dude pretty well and I feel he's honest about the deal. The mechanic work doesn't scare me but I just don't want to be in to deep on a $4000 dozer
