I know that this probably isn't feasible but is it possible to get a 980b cat loader 8'6" in width. I know it would involve allot of work but just wondered the axle width without the tires. found one for a very cheap price but, overwidth permits are super pricey any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

They start out at 9' 9". Sort of depends on where the lift arms are on the bucket. Anything's possible with enough time and money.

You answered your own question. It's not even remotely feasible. You need to go down to 950 size to be able to meet 8' 6" width restrictions.

time I got money not so much. was going to block it on the lowboy and remove tires then set it down on timbers. chase cars and overwidth permits are around 7,000.

Bucket widths for the 980B range from 118" to 128", so you would need to remove the bucket as well.

$7000! Wow, that sure is a ream. I remember talking to a guy once who wanted to ship a big Komatsu FEL (about 992 size) out of AZ to Australia. It had to go to LA port to leave the U.S.
The costs of just moving that machine from AZ to LA were staggering. I remember I said to him - "But the Americans have the best highways in the world!?".
He replied, "Yep, and with what they charge to use them, they plan to keep 'em that way, too!" 😄

do the planetaries unbolt like the ones on the newer 980gs? I was thinking bucket and tires would have to be removed.

No, 980B planetaries don't unbolt like the 980G's. It would be easiest to unbolt the entire axles if they don't meet the width restriction.

well apparently I need an overwidth permit going there and coming back no matter if I'm underwidth before the machine is on the deck. an overwidth permit to travel within 30 miles of new York city requires 2 chase cars one in the front one in the rear. then I need a highway permit, overwidth liability insurance and whatever else I'm forgetting. I really like the axle idea!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
